Hundreds of Births Supported
Preparing for a VBAC can bring hope, excitement, and plenty of questions. You deserve experienced support that honors your previous birth while helping you prepare intentionally for the next one.
YOUR NEXT BIRTH IS ITS OWN STORY
Preparing for a VBAC Can Feel Hopeful—and Complicated
After a cesarean, preparing for another birth often comes with more questions than the first time around. You may feel hopeful about having a VBAC while also wondering whether your body will cooperate, whether your provider is truly supportive, or whether your previous experience could happen again.
As a Twin Cities VBAC doula, I help you work through those questions with practical education, personalized preparation, and steady support. Together, we explore your options, prepare your body and partner, and create flexible birth preferences that reflect what matters most to you.
The goal is not to guarantee one particular outcome. It is to help you enter your birth feeling informed, prepared, supported, and confident in the decisions you make along the way.
Your Previous Birth Matters…
Your cesarean may have been planned, unexpected, peaceful, difficult—or somehow all of those things at once. Before preparing for your next birth, it can be helpful to understand what happened and identify what you would like to approach differently this time.
Reviewing your experience is not about blaming you, your body, or your medical team. It helps us recognize the questions you still have, the support you may need, and the parts of your VBAC preparation that deserve extra attention.
Your previous experience may help guide conversations about:
What led to your cesarean
How you felt during labor and decision-making
Whether you felt informed, heard, and supported
Questions to discuss with your provider
Fears or concerns you are carrying into this birth
What you would like your partner and birth team to understand
Preferences you want to communicate more clearly this time
You are not starting over. You are preparing with experience, perspective, and a clearer understanding of what matters to you.
PERSONALIZED VBAC PREPARATION
How a VBAC Doula Supports You
VBAC preparation begins long before labor. Together, we prepare your mind, body, partner, and birth preferences so you feel more confident navigating the many decisions your birth may bring.
Evidence-Based Education:
Understand common VBAC benefits, risks, terminology, and hospital practices so you can ask informed questions and have productive conversations with your provider.
Body Ready Method® Preparation:
Use individualized exercises, functional movement, and labor positions to support mobility, comfort, and pelvic balance as you prepare for birth.
Partner Preparation:
Your partner will practice hands-on comfort techniques, helpful positions, emotional reassurance, and practical ways to stay involved throughout labor.
Continuous Labor Support:
During labor, I provide steady emotional support, hands-on comfort measures, position suggestions, and help communicating your questions and preferences to your medical team.
Your support continues even if your plans change or your VBAC becomes a cesarean. The goal is never to pressure you toward one outcome—it is to help you feel prepared, respected, and supported throughout your birth.
BODY READY METHOD®
Preparing Your Body for Labor
As a certified Body Ready Method® Pro, I incorporate individualized movement and body preparation into our prenatal work together.
We may explore pelvic balance, mobility, comfortable movement patterns, and positions that create space for your baby to rotate and descend. You and your partner will also practice positions and hands-on techniques you can use during different stages of labor.
Body preparation cannot guarantee a VBAC or prevent a cesarean. It can give you practical tools for comfort and mobility while helping you feel more prepared for the physical work of labor.
Your preparation may include:
• An individualized Body Ready Method® assessment
• Functional movement and mobility
• Pelvic balance and position awareness
• Labor positions for different parts of the pelvis
• Hands-on comfort techniques for your partner
• A personalized prenatal movement plan
YOUR BIRTH TEAM MATTERS
Finding a VBAC-Supportive Provider
A provider may technically allow VBAC without approaching it with the same comfort, experience, or flexibility as another practice. Asking specific questions can help you understand how your provider typically supports families planning a vaginal birth after cesarean.
Your medical provider will help determine whether VBAC is an appropriate option for your individual circumstances. As your doula, I can help you prepare questions, understand the information you receive, and communicate your priorities—but I do not provide medical advice or make medical decisions.
How often do you care for families planning a VBAC?
What is your practice’s VBAC success rate?
Under what circumstances would you recommend a repeat cesarean?
How do you approach induction or augmentation during a VBAC?
Are there routine time limits for labor or pushing?
What type of monitoring will be required?
Will I be able to move, change positions, or use water while being monitored?
How do you typically respond when labor progresses more slowly than expected?

— Brinn J. Questions About VBAC Doula Support
-
A VBAC doula provides education, emotional support, physical comfort measures, partner preparation, and continuous labor support. I can help you process your previous birth, prepare questions for your provider, create flexible birth preferences, and practice positions and comfort techniques. I do not provide medical advice or determine whether VBAC is appropriate for you.
-
No doula, provider, exercise, or birth plan can guarantee a VBAC. Birth can unfold in unexpected ways, even with thoughtful preparation. My role is to help you feel informed, physically prepared, supported in your decisions, and cared for throughout your experience—whether your baby is born vaginally or by cesarean.
-
Many families begin looking during the second trimester, but it is never too early to reach out. Hiring earlier gives us more time to review your previous experience, discuss your options, prepare questions for your provider, incorporate Body Ready Method® tools, and prepare your partner. Availability is limited by due date, so contacting me early is recommended.
-
Some people may be candidates for a vaginal birth after two or more cesareans, but it depends on individual circumstances, including previous uterine incisions, health history, pregnancy considerations, provider recommendations, and birthplace policies. Your physician or midwife should review your medical records and discuss the potential benefits and risks with you.
-
Induction may be an option for some people planning a VBAC, although available methods and recommendations can differ from those used without a prior cesarean. Your provider should explain why induction is being considered, which methods are available, and how each option may affect your individual benefits and risks.
-
Absolutely. Choosing a repeat cesarean does not mean you need less preparation or support. I can help you create thoughtful cesarean birth preferences, prepare your partner, discuss what to expect, and explore ways to make the experience feel more personal and intentional. My support is never dependent on choosing one particular way to give birth.
-
My support does not disappear when the plan changes. Depending on hospital policies and the circumstances, I can help you understand what is happening, communicate questions, support your partner, and remain with you before or after surgery. We can also discuss cesarean preferences prenatally so you have considered options for more than one possible path.
-
Look beyond whether a provider simply “allows” VBAC. A VBAC-friendly provider regularly supports VBAC, is comfortable allowing labor to unfold when parent and baby are doing well, and discusses induction, monitoring, movement, and cesarean recommendations on an individual basis. A VBAC-tolerant provider may technically permit VBAC but rely on stricter policies, routine time limits, or a lower threshold for recommending a repeat cesarean. Ask specific questions about their experience and typical practices to understand the difference. I can help you prepare those questions and interpret the answers, while your provider determines your medical eligibility.
